DeSoto's Planned Route to China


       

Notice that the LINES on the maps above, which begin at Cuba where DeSoto started, run up the Mississippi River and across Lake Michigan, Cabeza de Vaca's Northern Sea, to China. Europe needed a NEW trade route to China to avaid high tarriffed Portugese controlled African seaways. France and England continued that search long after DeSoto's Lake Michigan discovery.
